I have a 12-year-old boy and we cannot go to DC without going to the Stephen Udvar-Hazy Air and Space Museum. This is NOT the one on the National mall, rather the one at Dulles airport. It's a little bit out but well worth the trip. There is an SR-71, the fast plane in the world, The Space Shuttle Enterprise (which never flew in space) and the Enola Gay, the plane that dropped the atomic bomb on Hiroshima. It's fascinating. Then you can go to the tower and hear ATC and watch planes land.
